I did not post yesterday for a number of reasons. The main one was that I was a bit overwhelmed with preparation for two interviews I had today and a whole slew of things that just became TOO MUCH, and it set my mood at “ill ease”: disintegrate level, not stun.
A cancellation at Connect to Care allowed me to seek guidance from the woman who had helped me revamp my resume. I was looking to see how I could broaden my search for work in case either interview came to naught. When I was leaving her office, she said: “Tomorrow morning, leave the house on your right foot.”
That is exactly what my mother used to say every time I would go out on a job interview, or a first date, or for anything else of any real importance. “Leave the house on your right foot!”
It struck me, as yesterday was three months to the day my mom died. It didn’t make me sad. More wistful, chagrined, than anything else. It’s a superstition, a family thing passed on. Naomi, the woman who helped me and said those words, stated that HER mother used to say the same thing to her. Connections.
Curious, I looked up the superstition today. From mythany.com:
Getting out of bed on the wrong side
The act of getting out of bed on the left side is believed to make a person’s entire day unhappy. You are supposed to rise from the bed and place your right foot on the floor first. This superstition has to do with an ancient belief that right was good and left was bad.
So…get out of bed on the right foot, leave your home with your right foot, think right….and have a happy day!!
(PS: More on the jobs later in the week. I do not want to jinx any possibilities. Wait….is that a black cat? aieeeeee!!!!)

(FYI: “sinister” derives from the Latin for left-handed. It probably came to denote evil intent or bad luck because left-handedness was considered an aberration and discouraged in children long ago.) I’ve no real belief in the old superstitions, and yet I’ve passed a few down to my son – these things seem to act as a thread of continuity through generations, which I suppose makes them lucky sayings in a way 🙂

Oh, dear! As I sleep on the left side of the bed, my right foot is not the one which touches the floor first. However, I think since most of my days have been fortuitous, this is just one of those myths that we cherish not because of what it says, but because we loved the person who quoted it.

Believe it or not, certain religions have rules about which shoe and sock to put on first- and which foot to start out walking… (I checked to make sure that at least one of them was not based on anti-sinister [lefty] bias…)
Whichever way you wake up from bed and step out of the house, keep the tune in your heart that you are great and will succeed- and smile because you love the folks you meet…That beats the other processes… hands down.

That must have been a bittersweet moment Stu but it seems like you are starting to find your peace. Superstitions have a way of helping us manage at times even if you dont’ wholly believe in them. Like you said..connections and isn’t the the whole reason for the human condition? To make connections and feel part of a bigger whole?

I did not get what I was hoping for. I was offered something, and I took it, but it is not the Godsend I was hoping for. It does not really take me out of my prediciment.
