Walking

walking in the woodsHow do you walk?
Head down,
Or,
Straight ahead?

Do you watch where you walk’
Step by step
Noticing nothing but your steps
That you don’t trip
That you don’t fall down
That you don’t connect
with anything but your way?

Do you stride ahead
Step by step
Noting what is around you
The people passing by
The landscape that surrounds you
Things newly discovered
Taking in,but distant, from what is ahead?

Do you look all around, up and down,
Step by step
Focusing all ways as you walk ahead?
So you notice your safety
So you notice all around you
So you connect with the world
Do you occasionally stop
Take a breath
Take it all in
Take that necessary moment, for yourself?

Do you allow your thoughts to go where they will
Creating words, to write down later
To sing a song that is playing inside
To create, to yearn, to wonder…?
And, then, in walking
You find something
Someone else missed it, possibly,
And you share it with them,
Give it to them
Materially or spiritually
Giving a gift
To them, and yourself.

Continue walking
Never mind the stumbles
Never mind the abyss
Never mind the obstacles
Hold onto yourself
Hold onto your friends, you love, your family
Hold onto what is possible
Keep walking forward
